A Good Good Father

By: Ahmad Alexander

Do you remember the moment you first heard the words, “You are going to be a Father?” I’m sure you had your share of emotions: joy, excitement, anxiety and nervousness. “Is this really happening?’’ “How will I do this?” “I’m now responsible for a little life!”  Most of all, I’m sure your deepest desire and greatest fear was to be a good father, to provide for, protect, and nurture your growing child.

All of those hopes and dreams came crashing down when the reality of losing your child hit you. The unfounded guilt of failing your child and the mother of your child tormented you. The question of whether you would have been a good father anyway eats at you. I’m here to tell you that you didn’t fail your child.  Circumstances happen and something bad occurred to your family, but there is an ultimate good, good Father who cares deeply for His children (1 Peter 5:7). Just as you’ve longed for your child to lay in your arms, God longs for you to rest in Him (Matthew 11:28). Just as you’ve longed to whisper “I love you” to your baby, God whispered I love you when He gave His Son’s life for you (John 3:16; Romans 5:8).  He wants to be a shield for you (Proverbs 30:5; Psalms 84:11). He wants to provide for and protect you (Psalm 91; Psalm 23). He desires for you to know Him. Therefore, on this Father’s Day, whether you are embracing your children in your arms or cherishing a precious memory of them, I pray you know there’s a good, good Father who cares for you.

If you have never come to a personal relationship with the Father by accepting his son Jesus into your heart, you can do that now. Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and once we accept that truth, not only do we receive the guarantee of eternal life in Heaven with Him but we also get to know our Father in a more personal way… the same way in which we long to have that personal and loving relationship with our babies. Happy Father’s Day.
