Fearfully and Wonderfully Made
By: Polly Brinker
You just found out you are expecting a baby. Your dreams of a future with this new bundle of joy grow and your excitement mounts. As a expecting parent, you dream of perfect scenarios. The last words you expect or want to hear, are that your unborn child has a life-threatening disability or even worse that your unborn child has passed away. The questions of “Why?”, “How?”, “Why me?” plague your mind. Unfortunately, you may never find the answers that you want, but here is a reminder of the TRUTH we can rest in: We are fearfully and wonderfully made, that also includes the child that you can only carry in your heart, and God knows the number of our days.
For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! f should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You. Psalm 139:13-19
How amazing is this Psalm of David which talks about God’s omniscience, His omnipresence, His justice, His righteousness, and His omnipotence. In the midst of such glorious revelations of God, David breaks into words of joy over the recognition that God knew him and created him while he was still in his mother’s womb. God is the One who formed his inward parts, who covered him in his mother’s womb, who skillfully wrought his frame together in secret. How amazing is our God. The word “covered” means “woven together.”
In verse 15, the term “skillfully wrought” is translated “embroidered” in Exodus (i.e., Ex. 28:39) which describes the beautiful embroidery work done for the Tabernacle curtains. In other words, our bodies are like tapestries which God intricately and artistically designed, each one unique and different. David also says that God has ordained our days even before we are born (verse 16). God’s eyes sees our substance when yet we were unformed. That means from the moment of conception. God has a divine plan for our lives as Philippians 2:13 says, “for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” God’s thoughts toward us are greater in number than the sand of the sea. That means they are innumerable! If you think of how many thoughts you have concerning your children every day, just imagine how many thoughts God has toward us!
Psalm 139 teaches us that God fearfully and wonderfully created us. God sees us. God has written our days for us and His thoughts toward us are innumerable. We can feel completely safe and secure in Him knowing how much He loves you and me! He loved us so much that He sent Jesus to redeem our souls and give us eternal life. Our response to such great love is to praise Him, to bow before Him as our King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Let us live out the days He has fashioned for us knowing His eyes are upon us and His thoughts toward us. Let us live every day to know Him better and to make Him known to all nations
