Saturday
Oh, Saturday! I think if we were still into writing Epic Greek Poems or Shakespearean sonnets, I could fill pages with how amazing you are. For most, Saturday is the day of recovery from a full week of work. No more 9 to 5 in the office. No suits, no shirts, no problems! We can spend the day in relative leisure.
However, I have recently been given new insight into Saturday. During a book study I did as part of Anchored Soul's new mission emphasis on fostering communities, Pastor Levi Lusko, in his book Through the Eyes of a Lion, has incredible perspective about Saturday. In particular, he speaks of Saturday from the emotions of Jesus’s disciples in the shadow of the cross.
On a Friday, Jesus was crucified. The man they thought could be the one to free them all was now dead. They were afraid and scattered. Broken and lost. After spending the last two years following this man their lives had become unanchored.
Then Sunday came! And the triumphant King of Kings rolled away the stone and stepped out to His fullness of Glory.
But what about Saturday?
There was still a day in between. Still “a day of crushing disappointment” (Lusko). Still a time of unfulfillment.
Some of us may find ourselves in Saturday. Not the leisure day, but the day of uncertainty. The day of confusion and feeling unanchored to our own lives because of a seemingly terrible Friday.
But take heart, because unlike the disciples who had an agonizing wait to see if promises were kept, we know what Sunday holds. We know there is a brighter tomorrow and a greater purpose ahead of our Fridays. It is through this hope we have in our Sunday that we can get through the Saturday.
